Today in AMR, we did stand ups and live shots. I was pretty scared to do both, because I thought I'd mess up. But, I practiced a lot to memorize my lines. It paid off in the end because I only had to do one take for both! I actually really enjoy stand ups after doing some.
My first was on these really cool new water bottle fountains around campus. My crew and I went to Squires Student Center to get shots, but the lighting was HORRIBLE! It was way too dark. In the article we based our stand ups on, it said there were some in the library next door. After packing up our equipment, we headed over the library. I saw a water fountain on the first floor and got really excited, but it just turned out to be a regular ol' water fountain. I gave up and asked the woman at the reference desk where these fancy new fountains are, and it was all the way on the fourth floor. Finally, we found the fountain. However, it seemed like happy hour over there because so many people were going to the fountain and getting in our shot. No worries though, because we eventually all go it done. :) I was really proud of myself because I actually brought a water bottle and used it as a prop (shown in the picture above)!
Then came the live shot. It was really nice outside, which set the perfect scenery. We did our live shot on the Moss Arts Center, home of the Center for the Arts at Virginia Tech. I took a screen shot from the live shot of me standing in front of the CFTA and made it my banner (above) because I'm a nerd and think it looks really cool. Anyways, I did that in one take too! It was fun pretending I was actually listening to someone in the studio who was introducing me. My group got done just in time and went to check the footage. Unfortunately, we left the filter button on and it turned out super dark. BUT, that wasn't even the real problem! The stand up mic made this really creepy alien-esque sound. It totally ruined my clip. :( I was so bummed because I nailed it and was going to use it for my DVD resume. But, at least I got a really cool screencap and experience from it, right? Hopefully I'll have better luck in the future.
Until next time,
Sara
Also, I found this gem when I was looking for examples of stand ups. Personally, I think it's hilarious. I love that his name is Gary Vosot (like..VO/SOT....anyone?).
